Food is First

We often hear that eating disorders are “not about the food.” This may be intended to acknowledge their complexity, but it can also become a loophole that allows inadequate eating to continue.
If the eating disorder prevents someone from following their meal plan or eating adequately, regularly, and consistently, then food remains central to both the illness and its treatment.
Our responsibility is to help clients learn, practise and eventually trust adequate eating, not wait for perfect insight, motivation or psychological readiness. Food first does not mean food only. It means giving the brain and body the nourishment they need for flexibility, learning, connection, and meaningful psychological work.
We want people to have the best possible chance of building a full and satisfying life, not remain trapped in explanations that leave the starved brain in charge.
